This does not mean every phone or laptop will suddenly become expensive. However, it does mean buyers may need to pay more attention to specifications, timing and value before upgrading.

One of the biggest reasons is the rising cost of memory. Modern smartphones and laptops depend heavily on DRAM and NAND storage. DRAM allows devices to keep applications and information readily available while NAND storage holds photos, videos, applications and operating-system files. AI infrastructure also requires enormous amounts of high-performance memory and storage. As technology companies continue investing in AI data centers, demand for these components is putting additional pressure on the semiconductor industry. In reality, both depend on the global semiconductor industry. AI companies need processors and memory. Smartphone manufacturers need processors and memory. Laptop manufacturers need processors and memory. When demand changes dramatically in one part of the industry, it can affect supply, production decisions and pricing elsewhere. That is why the AI boom is increasingly becoming a consumer-hardware story as well.
Consumers do not need to panic about rising technology costs. The smarter approach is to buy according to actual needs. If your existing phone or laptop still performs well, keeping it longer can be a sensible choice. If you need an upgrade, focus on useful specifications, long-term software support and overall value. The biggest lesson from the current hardware market is simple: newer does not automatically mean better value. In 2026, choosing the right device may matter more than choosing the newest device.
